National Day of the Cowboy

               Cowboys have always been a symbol of “The American Way” since the beginning of America. They fought for freedom, for justice and a place to hang their hat. With dedication, heart and the code of the west, cowboys achieved that and more.  The National Day of the Cowboy allows horsemen and their loved ones a chance to salute what was fought for and won so long ago.

                Just like in the early 1900’s, today’s cowboy lifestyle is one of integrity, hard work and spirit. Modern day cowboys and cowgirls work on the ranch tending to livestock and the land. The code of the west that once unofficially ruled the land is now established in the hearts of the modern day cow folk. (Live each day with courage. Take pride in your work. Always finish what you start. Do what has to be done. Be tough, but fair. When you make a promise, keep it. Ride for the brand. Talk less and say more. Remember that some things aren’t for sale. Know where to draw the line.)

                The cowboy lifestyle is celebrated today with rodeos, team penning, equestrian riding shows, and through music and movies. Although much has changed over the years, “Ride for your life” has not changed. “Ride for your life” is a campaign for horsemen everywhere. Its meaning is to show your spirit and soul through something you stand for, and those things you stand by.

                For generations to come, the cowboy way and lifestyle will depict people of spirit, soul and heart. The love of the land and the unspoken code will hold true and strong in the heart of America, and will not be forgotten. So celebrate this Cowboy Day like the first cowboys in America did. Ride with heart, ride with soul and ride with the love of the land you ride on.

The National Day of the Cowboy campaign, a campaign asking for a national day of recognition for the Cowboy and Cowgirl, was conceived by magazine publisher, Bill Bales. Bales believed that the men and women at the core of our western heritage should be honored and recognized for the substantial contributions they have made and continue to make to American history and western culture.
